Eastcastle Place
Award of Merit: Residential
Eastcastle Place in Milwaukee is a senior living community,
and age and charm distinguish it as a key historic landmark
in the city's East Side. The existing Protestant Home building
was originally built in 1884.
Plans called for building to be a modern assisted-living facility
and an addition to the existing Victorian Gothic structure.
The majority of the major design elements were carried through
to the new building, thereby preserving the historic feel of
the neighborhood. Brick, stone, slate, mansard roofs with copper
flashings, gutters and downspouts were used to complement the
style of the original building.
Two five-story additions were built onto the east and the west
sides of the existing Mabbett Wing, which under renovation as
part of the project.
The structure has underground parking and numerous common areas,
including arts/crafts rooms, beauty parlor, game room, media
room, sun rooms, therapy tub rooms, laundry rooms, offices,
bank, general store, computer center, aquatic spa and wellness
center.
Has Contemporary Element
The project's second phase was the construction of a contemporary
building containing luxury apartments.
Common areas again include dining rooms, lobby, cafeteria
and card rooms.
The new contemporary apartments offer unique designs with
options for structural details, such as turret dining rooms
and balcony views. High-end finishes were used throughout.
The complete facility has 82 luxury apartment units, 52 assisted-living
apartments, 20 memory support rooms and 32 private skilled
nursing rooms.
Jury Comments: "From the standpoint of the look of the
finished project, the interior design was fabulous. The residents
have a fine addition to a historic Milwaukee building."
