commentThe Indiana University School of Medicine Dept. of Ophthalmology has begun construction of The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
The building was designed by Ratio Architects and is being constructed by F.A. Wilhelm Construction, Inc., both of Indianapolis.
The four-story, 77,000-sq-ft facility will house patient care and clinical areas, an optical shop, laboratory research space, a mock surgery center, training facilities for medical students and administration areas.
More than 35,000 sq ft will be dedicated to basic biomedical and clinical research aimed at advancing understanding of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, neurological eye disorders and eye disease in children.
Anticipated to meet US Green Building Council’s LEED Gold specifications, the project features high-efficiency mechanical systems, and passive solar and daylighting controls. Many of the building’s materials are recycled, or grown, extracted, processed and manufactured within 500 miles of the building site, reducing transportation costs and pollution. Construction waste and land-clearing debris will be sorted on the construction site and recycled. In addition, rain gardens will collect storm water from the roof and irrigate adjacent landscaped areas.
