Midwest Students, Interns Take PCI Prizes
Four student and intern teams from the Midwest were winners
in the 2003 Architectural Design Competition sponsored by
the Chicago-based Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute's
Student Education Committee.
The first-place winners in the student category were Dave
Kurtz and Zin Anastasi of Southern Illinois University in
Carbondale. An honorable mention was given to the team of
Travis Krick and Tyler Saxma, also of SIU.
The third-place winner in the Intern Development Program,
which comprises college graduates not yet licensed as architects,
was Kristopher White of Architectural Spectrum in Champaign,
Ill. An honorable mention went to the SIU-SCI Student Affiliate.
Teams were asked to present a concept for university housing
that provided apartment-style living for 168 to 200 students.
Each occupant was to be provided with individual living space
grouped into four-student suites that contained a living room,
kitchen, dining area, two full bathrooms and laundry.
The winning entries will be exhibited at the 2003 PCI Annual
Convention & Exhibition in Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 19 to
22.

The Des Plaines-based Association of Subcontractors &
Affiliates/ASA Chicago has recently recognized six industry
leaders at its ninth annual awards dinner at Medinah Country
Club in Medinah, Ill.:

Milwaukee AGC Parties, Honors Seven
Construction professionals who have contributed to the industry's
success in Milwaukee were recently honored during the Annual
Past Presidents & Awards Night.
Honorees included the past presidents of the Association General
Contractors of Greater Milwaukee - sponsor of the event -
the Milwaukee Builders Exchange and the graduates of the Supervisory
Training Program.
Individuals receiving honors included the following:
· Kevin O'Toole of Brookfield-based Hunzinger Construction
Co., Skill, Integrity and Responsibility Award
· Frank Slamar, Chairman of the Year Award, for efforts
on behalf of the AGCGM Safety Committee
· Les Lippert of Menomonee Falls-based Lippert Tile
Co., Associate of the Year Award, for contributions to the
AGCGM
· John Hauke of Waukesha-based Voss Jorgenson Schueler,
Harvey Peterson Award, for unyielding commitment to construction
safety
· Thomas Bentley III of Milwaukee-based The Bentley
Co., Pioneer Award, for long and selfless dedication to the
AGC and the construction industry
· Larry Farkas of Hunzinger Construction Co., Gil Czaplewski
Superintendent of the Year Award
· Thomas Crean of Marquette University for leadership
and efforts resulting in a positive community spirit in Milwaukee
Indiana BCA Funds Six Scholarships
The Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Building Contractors Association
has awarded six Northeast Indiana Construction Advancement
Foundation scholarships.
Winners are Jeremy Bangert, Jennifer Bowman, Katherine Papagiannis,
Joel Rinkenberger, Stephen Schuhmacher and James Stoller.
Each is pursuing an undergraduate degree in construction engineering
technology at Indiana University - Purdue University Fort
Wayne.
SEAOI Installs President, Council
The Chicago-based Structural Engineers Association of Illinois
has elected its president and governing council for 2003.
Carl Peterson, senior consultant with Chicago-based Wiss Janney
Elstner Associates Inc., is the new president.
Members of the governing council include Deb Zroka of Branco
& Zroka Engineering PC as president-elect; Roger Reckers
of TGRWA LLC as treasurer; and Thomas McCluskey of McCluskey
Engineering Corp. as secretary.
Members elected to the Board of Directors include Timothy
Kaye of Halvorson & Kaye SE, George Krupa with Parsons
Engineering and William Malinowski of Consoer Townsend Envirodyne
Engineers Inc.
