AIA Northeast Illinois Names Design Winners
Eight projects received recognition in the American Institute
of Architects/AIA Northeast Illinois 2003 Honor Awards, the
Naperville-based group announced.
Four Awards for Excellence were given, the first three for
distinguished buildings and the last for interiors:
Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church project in
Grayslake, Harding Partners in Chicago architect
Unity Junior High School project in Cicero, FGM Architects
Engineers Inc. in Oak Brook architect
Washington Street Substation project in Naperville,
Oppermann Bilsland Architects, also in Naperville, architect
FGM Architects Engineers Inc. Algonquin office project
and self-performed the architecture
The following received Merit Awards, the first three for distinguished
buildings and the last for "divine details/architectural
ideas":
First Christian Church project in Gurnee, David F.
Schultz Associates Ltd. in Barrington architect
Oak Prairie Middle School project in Lockport, FGM
Architects Engineers Inc. architect
The Pampered Chef project in Bloomingdale, Heitman
Architects Inc. in Itasca architect
St. Basil/Visitation project in Chicago, Jaeger, Nickola
& Associates Ltd. in Park Ridge architect
In all, 52 entries were submitted for projects in suburban
Cook, DuPage and Kane countries.
AIA Illinois Names 'Honor' Winners
The Springfield-based American Institute of Architects/AIA
Illinois recently announced its Honor Awards during a luncheon
at the University of Illinois School of Architecture in
Champaign.
The Building and Research Council at the U. of I. was honored
with the President's Award for its commitment to smarter building
The City of Highland Park received honors for adopting an
affordable housing plan
FGM Architects Engineers Inc. in Oak Brook was recognized
for "re-invention of an architectural practice in the
most positive light"
Peter Exley of the Art Institute of Chicago was honored
for his contribution to education
Ken Crocco, president of the AIA Illinois, for service to
the profession
Entries Sought for Construction Management
Nominations are being accepted through July 1 for the annual
Construction Management Project Achievement Awards.
The awards competition, which is sponsored by the McLean,
Va.-based Construction Management Association of America,
is designed to recognize and promote construction-management
professionalism.
The competition is open to CMAA members and nonmembers.
Nominated projects must have been completed between June
30, 2003, and June 30, 2004.

Salaries Increase For Landscape Grads
Salaries for landscape architecture graduates rose to an
average of $35,000 in 2003 from $33,000 in 2002, a survey
found.
For graduates of undergraduate programs, the average 2003
starting salary was $34,000, compared to $32,000 in 2002.
For those with graduate degrees, the 2003 starting salary
averaged $41,000, compared to $38,000 in 2002.

American Society of Landscape Architects, is posted online
