Indiana BCA Names Construction Winners
The Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Building Contractors Association
announced the winners of its 2004 BCA Excellence in Construction
Awards.
The Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne
Crescent Avenue Pedestrian Bridge in Fort Wayne for new construction
- public project
The Steel Dynamics Inc. facility in Columbia City,
Ind., for new construction - private project
The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne
for renovation - public project
The Cooper Farms Cooked Meats project in Van Wert, Ohio,
for renovation - private project
The awards recognize the most outstanding projects in a 75-mi.
radius of Fort Wayne completed during 2003. An independent
panel chose winners based on uniqueness, significance/impact
to the community, BCA-member involvement and safety record.
In other news, the BCA recognized two local construction professionals
for their charity work.
Mark Hagerman, president and CEO of Hagerman Construction
Corp., received the 2004 Gold Medal Award for his work with
the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo.
Robert Weigand, retired president of Weigand Construction
Co., was presented with the Summit Award for his work with
St. Charles Catholic Church.
A $500 donation was presented to each winner's charity in
honor of the service they have given. The BCA said that these
are its most prestigious awards.
Wisconsin AIA Honors Eight
Eight building projects have been recognized for excellence
in architectural design, the Madison-based American Institute
of Architects/AIA Wisconsin announced.
Five architects received Honor Awards for overall design
excellence:
Fuerer Gastrau Architktur/Gastrau & Associates
of Switzerland and Milwaukee for the Sutter Residence in
Switzerland
KEE Architects Inc. of Madison for the design of
the RS+K Strategic/Creative office, also in Madison
Perkins & Will of Chicago and Potter Lawson
Inc. of Madison for the Rennenbohm Hall research facility
on the University of Wisconsin at Madison campus
Vetter Denk Architects Inc. of Milwaukee for The
Milwaukee Rowing Club at Kilbourn Landing boathouse
Three architects received Merit Awards for excellence in
particular elements of architectural design:
Flad & Associates Inc. of Madison for the ACT
Inc. headquarters in Iowa City, Iowa
Johnsen Schmaling Architects of Milwaukee for the
Parts House Roof Pavilion, a private space in Milwaukee
The Renschler Co. Inc. of Madison for the University
of Wisconsin Health Clinic in Portage
Special recognition was given to Kahler Slater of Milwaukee
for the ASQ Center renovation in Milwaukee.
Steel Guide Updated
The second edition of the American Institute of Steel Construction
Inc.'s Design Guide is available.
The revised edition, "Serviceability Design Considerations
for Steel Buildings," addresses serviceability concerns
with all structures.
The authors are Michael West and James Fisher of Milwaukee-based
Computerized Structural Design and Larry Griffis of Houston-based
Walter P. Moore and Associates.
The guide is available online at no charge to AISC members
or a hardcopy can be purchased for $30; nonmembers can download
the guide for $60 or purchase a hardcopy, also for $60.

Safety Scholarship To Receive Funding
The Des Plaines, Ill.-based American Society of Safety
Engineers announced it will fund a construction safety scholarship
through its foundation.
The funds will be raised from royalties of the newly published
book, "Construction Safety Management and Engineering,"
which was written by ASSE members and others in the construction
safety field.
