Three Chicago Projects Win Steel Awards
Three Chicago projects were recently recognized for excellence
in steel design with the Innovative Design Excellence in Architecture
with Steel awards.
Soldier Field and North Burnham Park Redevelopment
won a Merit Award for construction that is $100 million or
greater. Wood + Zapata in Boston and Lohan Caprile Goettsch
Architects in Chicago were the designers.
The Erie on the Park condominium won a Merit Award
for construction greater than $25 million but less than $100
million. Lucien Lagrange Architect Ltd. of Chicago was the
designer.
The Tower House won a Merit Award for construction
that is less than $10 million.
Frederick Phillips and Associates Inc. of Chicago was the
architect.
Other projects outside the Midwest were also honored. The
recognition comes from the Chicago-based American Institute
of Steel Construction Inc.
ASA Chicago's First Safety Award Given
Itasca, Ill.-based FCL Builders Inc. has received the first-ever
Safety Award from the Association of Subcontractors &
Affiliates/ASA Chicago.
FCL received the most votes from ASA members when asked who
promotes a safe work environment for subcontractors on job
sites.
An event was held, and FCL received a plaque.
Protecting Public at Construction Sites
What is reportedly the only standard addressing public safety
at construction sites is available.
The Des Plaines, Ill.-based American Society of Safety Engineers
has announced the availability of the American National Standard
Institute's A10.34-2001, "Protection of the Public on
or Adjacent to Construction Sites."
The standard establishes guidelines for employers, contractors,
building owners and rescue personnel.
The standard, which is available in printed or electronic
format, is between $37 and $53 depending on an organization's
memberships.

Nine Recognized for Safety
Nine members of the Downers Grove-based Plumbing & Mechanical
Contractors Association of Northern Illinois were recently
recognized for improvements in their safety program.
Two contractors have won the award for the last three years,
Bensenville-based Abbott Industries and Morton Grove-based
Roughneck Concrete Drilling & Sawing Co. Inc.
Two others have won for the last two years, Alsip-based Chicago
Backflow Inc. and Freeport-based Mechanical Inc.
The other winners were Burr Ridge-based AMS Mechanical Systems
Inc.; Elk Grove Village-based Franks Mechanical Contractors
Inc.; St. Charles-based J.L. Wagner Plumbing & Piping
Inc.; Aurora-based Paul Buddy Plumbing & Heating; and
Barrington-based Professional Plumbing Inc.
