People Mover Wins PCA Honor
The Indianapolis People Mover won a Concrete in Transit Award
from the Skokie, Ill.-based Portland Cement Association.
The People Mover runs between Methodist Hospital and the
Indiana University Medical Center, a distance of 1.5 mi. The
foundations and guideway columns are cast-in-place concrete,
and the beams are made of precast concrete.
The judges were impressed with the clean design and low construction
cost, the PCA said.
The four other winners were outside the Midwest.
Midwest Students Win Construct Scholarships
Two of the three recently awarded scholarships from ConstructMyFuture.com
went to students in the Midwest.
Lucas Walloch, a senior at New Berlin Eisenhower High School
in New Berlin, Wis., was awarded $1,000, and Drake Koger,
a freshman at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.,
received $500.
Walloch will use his winnings to help pay for tuition in
the construction management program at the University of
Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie. Koger has dedicated his winnings
to his studies in Purdue's construction management program.

at www.constructmyfuture.com, is the construction careers
Web site designed to provide students, parents and educators
with information on construction careers.
The site is a joint effort of the Oak Brook, Ill.-based
Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation, the Milwaukee-based
Association of Equipment Manufacturers and the Alexandria,
Va.-based Associated General Contractors of America.
Fall Protection, Hoists Addressed
Two new American National Standard Institute standards
are available on fall protection guidelines and employee
hoists.
"Fall Protection Systems" establishes guidelines
for the use and inspection of fall protection equipment
and systems.
"Safety Requirements for Personnel Hoists and Employee
Elevators" provides requirements for the design, construction,
installation, operation, maintenance and inspection of elevators
and personnel hoists used by construction workers.
The standards, which are between $37 and $53 depending
on memberships, are available in printed format or as electronic
files from the Des Plaines, Ill.-based American Society
of Safety Engineers.

Two Illinoisans To Lead AEM
Charles Stamp Jr., vice president public affairs worldwide
of Moline, Ill.-based Deere and Co., was elected chairman
of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers in Milwaukee.
Gerald Shaheen, group president of Caterpillar Inc. in
Peoria, Ill., was elected the AEM's first vice chairman.
They previously served, respectively, as AEM first vice
chairman and second vice chairman.
