People Mover Wins PCA Honor

The Indianapolis People Mover won a Concrete in Transit Award from the Skokie, Ill.-based Portland Cement Association.

The People Mover runs between Methodist Hospital and the Indiana University Medical Center, a distance of 1.5 mi. The foundations and guideway columns are cast-in-place concrete, and the beams are made of precast concrete.

The judges were impressed with the clean design and low construction cost, the PCA said.

The four other winners were outside the Midwest.

Midwest Students Win Construct Scholarships

Two of the three recently awarded scholarships from ConstructMyFuture.com went to students in the Midwest.

Lucas Walloch, a senior at New Berlin Eisenhower High School in New Berlin, Wis., was awarded $1,000, and Drake Koger, a freshman at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., received $500.

Walloch will use his winnings to help pay for tuition in the construction management program at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie. Koger has dedicated his winnings to his studies in Purdue's construction management program.

ConstructMyFuture.com, which is accessible on the Internet at www.constructmyfuture.com, is the construction careers Web site designed to provide students, parents and educators with information on construction careers.

The site is a joint effort of the Oak Brook, Ill.-based Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation, the Milwaukee-based Association of Equipment Manufacturers and the Alexandria, Va.-based Associated General Contractors of America.

Fall Protection, Hoists Addressed

Two new American National Standard Institute standards are available on fall protection guidelines and employee hoists.

"Fall Protection Systems" establishes guidelines for the use and inspection of fall protection equipment and systems.

"Safety Requirements for Personnel Hoists and Employee Elevators" provides requirements for the design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance and inspection of elevators and personnel hoists used by construction workers.

The standards, which are between $37 and $53 depending on memberships, are available in printed format or as electronic files from the Des Plaines, Ill.-based American Society of Safety Engineers.
