500 Engineers Get Certification

The Chicago-based Structural Engineers Certification Board has granted its first certifications in structural engineering.
More than 500 structural engineers were certified in structural engineering through the organization in July.

The organization was started to promote public welfare and to aid stakeholders in selecting engineers qualified to practice structural engineering.

Certification for structural engineers was first proposed and discussed at Chicago-based National Council of Structural Engineers Association's 1998 Annual Conference. A committee was formed to research and recommend the framework for a certification program. The program was finally approved at NCSEA's 2003 Annual Conference. With approval of the NCSEA Member Organizations, NCSEA proceeded to form the autonomous Structural Engineering Certification Board.

Bosnian, Spanish Web Site Launched

Bosnian and Spanish translations have been launched of the Web site for Pride of St. Louis Inc., a voluntary construction labor-management organization.

The translations were launched because immigrants who speak those languages are becoming a "significant" labor resource, said Jim LaMantia, Pride's executive director.

An estimated 80,000 Bosnian and Hispanic immigrants are in the St. Louis area. The Bosnian population has grown from less than 100 in 1990 to an estimated 30,000 today, and the Hispanic population has more than doubled since 1990 to an estimated 50,000 today.
