E-Newsletter Launched on Sustainability, Concrete

The Skokie-based Portland Cement Association announced the launch of Concrete Thinking e-newsletter, a resource for architects, engineers, and members of the building industry interested in sustainable development.

The free e-newsletter provides the latest news and information about the environmental benefits of building with cement-based products, as well as real-world examples of putting the products into use.

Concrete Thinking is distributed six times a year. Each edition includes

  • News and trends on issues related to concrete and sustainable development.

  • Links to news stories about cement-based projects that contribute to sustainability.





    JULIE Launches National 811 Number

    JULIE Inc., also known as the Illinois One-Call System, has announced the launch of a new national 811 call-before-you-dig number to help prevent excavators from damaging underground utility lines while digging and causing injury or service outages.

    In addition to JULIE's existing telephone number, 800-892-0123, 811 is a new FCC-designated national N-11 number that will assist excavators with reaching the one-call center. The one-call service will notify the appropriate member utilities, who then send locators or locate technicians to the requested site to mark underground lines for free.

    JULIE represents more than 1,700 utility members.





    Two Chicago Women Elected Officers of WCOE

    Theresa Kern, owner of Palos Heights-based MA Steel Erectors, was recently elected vice president of the Washington, D.C.-based Women Construction Owners & Executives USA.

    Elected the association's East Central Region Direct was Gina Raffin, an employee with Chicago-based Scale Construction Inc. Other officers were elected from outside the Midwest.

    The new Board of Directors has adopted a plan that focuses on expanded services to individuals and a greater national presence in the area of advocacy on business issues of interest to women.

    The WCOE is a national organization promoting the role of women owners and executives in construction.





    Baer Named Chief of Sheet Metal Contractors


    Jack Baer of Broadview-based Air Comfort Corp. was recently installed as president of the Chicagoland Sheet Metal Contractors Association.

    Officers installed at the dinner include Vice President James Cesak, president of Crestwood-based Tal-Mar Custom Metal; and Secretary-Treasurer John Comforte, president and CEO of Chicago-based Climatemp Inc.

    They are joining those on the existing board.

    They comprise James Billard of Hill Mechanical Group, Franklin Park; Scott Descourouez of Admiral Heating & Ventilating Inc., Hillside; John Harmon of Builders Heating Inc., Crestwood; John Lindemulder of Amber Mechanical Contractors Inc., Alsip; Donald Malzahn of R. B. Hayward Company, Schiller Park; David Osterman of Builders Heating Inc., Crestwood; and Michael Vinci of VMI Mechanical Systems, Arlington Heights.
