Three Midwesterners
Get Scholarships

Three Midwesterners were recipients of college scholarships from the Doylestown, Pa.-based National Demolition Association.

Linda Aurora Carreon of Chicago and Amanda Lloyd of Prior Lake, Minn., each were recipients of $5,000 scholarships.

Rebecca Doll of Cincinnati was awarded the Southern California Chapter of the National Demolition Association Scholarship, also $5,000.

Landscape Award Winners
Have Midwest Ties

Two winners of the annual awards of the American Society of Landscape Architects have Midwest ties.

The Jot D. Carpenter Teaching Medal went to Terence Harkness of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for his sustained and significant contributions to landscape architecture education, the ASLA said.

Harkness’ passion for teaching has inspired many leading designers in the profession. Former students describe him moving seamlessly from presenting a complex design issue to respectfully questioning a jury, to actively listening to one-on-one desk critique that bring out the best in a young designer.

He treats students as entry-level designers and involves them in real-world projects. His teaching principles bear fruit in students’ work because they win clients, commissions, and competitions.

The Landscape Architecture Firm Award went to Sasaki Associates Inc., in Watertown, Mass.

While Sasaki has evolved over the past 50 years into an interdisciplinary firm of tremendous breadth and scope, it is still firmly rooted in and inspired by a landscape architecture legacy begun by Hideo Sasaki in 1953. Sasaki foresaw collaboration among design disciplines but was also an early advocate of environmental responsibility.

Projects like the John Deere Headquarters in Moline, Ill., remain some of the most renowned landscapes in the United States, and the firm’s penchant for elegant, timeless design can be seen in current work, including the master plan of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Green.
