Three Midwesterners Get Fellowships

The Skokie-based Portland Cement Association Education Foundation has announced three of eight graduate students were awarded educational fellowships at the association’s recent fall meeting in Chicago.

  • Jaehong Kim, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Professor James LaFave; Development of Plastic Rotation Capacity Prediction Models for Intermediate Reinforced Concrete Frames Based on Beam-Column Connections Subjected to Seismic Lateral Loading.

  • Adam Knaack, University of Norte Dame, South Bend, Ind.; Professor Yahya Kurama; Properties of Reinforced Concrete for Use in Fire-Design of Concrete Structures.

  • Aleksandra Radlinksa, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.; Professor Jason Weiss; Using Limestone Fillers to Reduce Cracking Potential and Improve Shrinkage Performance of Low w/c Mixtures.

Each will receive $20,000 for university and study costs. The other recipients were outside the Midwest.

The PCA Education Foundation Research Fellowship identifies and rewards outstanding masters and doctoral students in the fields of engineering and physical sciences who are studying areas that advance the science and technology of cement and concrete.

Landa to Lead Illinois Interior Designers

James Landa was named president of the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. He is the owner of Aquaworks, an Evanston-based firm that provides design services in areas that include baths and kitchens.

Other new officers include President-Elect Hilary Sopata, Interior Visions Designs Inc., Park Ridge; Financial Director Joyce Hooks, Joyce Hooks Interiors, Hinsdale; Membership Director Sarah Anderson, Sarah Anderson Interiors, Wheaton; and Professional Development Director Paula Lutz, VOA Associates Inc., Chicago.

Other new officers include Communications Director John Baumeister, Baumeister Electronic Architects, Niles; Director-at-Large Joan Kaufman, Interior Planning & Design Inc., Naperville; and Student Representative Travis Huffhine, student at Harrington College of Design in Chicago.

ASID Illinois also announced Elizabeth Boaden was named its chapter administrator. She will be responsible for running the organization’s office. Previously, Boaden worked for Z Hudson Design of Chicago, an interior design firm.

PCA’s First ANSI-approved Standard Addresses Residential Dwellings

The National Standards Development Committee of the Skokie-based Portland Cement Association has approved the first standard using the American National Standards Institute-accredited voluntary consensus process.

The standard, PCA 100-07, “Prescriptive Method for Design and Construction of Residential Concrete Walls,” facilitates the use of cast-in-place concrete wall systems built with either removable or stay-in-place forms, such as insulating concrete forms. It applies to the construction of detached one- and two-family dwellings.

PCA 100-07 provides a simplified approach for the design and construction of cast-in-place concrete foundations and above-grade exterior walls. The approach is based on the requirements of ASCE 7-05, “Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures,” ACI 318-05, “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete” and tests results.

PCA anticipates that the standard will be referenced in the 2009 edition of the International Residential Code for One- and Two-Family Dwellings and is expected to be available from PCA by the end of the year.
