Seven Midwest Women Honored by Engineering Group

Two Midwest members of Women in Engineering ProActive Network recently received Distinguished Service awards, which recognize the impact of individuals in the organization.

The award went to the members of WEPAN’s Communications Committee, who included Cathy Pieronek of the University of Notre Dame and Kristina Kennedy of The Ohio State University, in addition to the other recipients outside the Midwest.

They worked for more than two years to develop and implement a new branding strategy, WEPAN says. The result included a new name, tagline and logo.

In other news, the WEPAN President’s Award was given to five Midwesterners in recognition of their leadership and work: Susan Arnold Christian, Kansas State University; Chris Anderson, Michigan Technological University; Beth Holloway, Purdue University; Janet Malley, University of Michigan; and Jennifer Sheridan, University of Wisconsin. Six other recipients were outside the Midwest.

NCCER to Offer Green Building Training

The National Center for Construction Education and Research in Gainesville, Fla., is partnering with the Sustainable Facilities and Infrastructure Research Team of the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech University to create a green-training program.

The curriculum, titled “Your Role in the Green Environment,” provides fundamental instruction in the green environment, green construction practices and green building rating systems.

The 15-hour introductory course introduces the LEED Green Building Rating System, helps identify construction activities that contribute to a project’s LEED rating and addresses common construction pitfalls to avoid in achieving LEED certification.

NCCER has been recognized as a U.S. Green Building Council Education Provider. NCCER abides by USGCB-established operational and educational criteria and is subject to annual reviews and audits for quality assurance.

The curriculum is also endorsed by Green Advantage® and recognized as beneficial to students and practitioners planning to sit for the Green Advantage Commercial/Residential certification exam.

Students successfully completing Your Role in the Green Environment through an NCCER-accredited training sponsor will earn industry-recognized credentials through the NCCER National Registry.

Kudos for Kwame’s Concrete Work

The Washington, D.C.-based American Concrete Pavement Association has recognized St. Louis-based Kwame Building Group/Green Joint Venture for the reconstruction of taxiway F, L & S at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

The project was rated the “best commercial service and military airport concrete paving project completed in Missouri in 2007.”

KWAME was a partner in the SPK Joint Venture along with Jacobs Engineering, Parsons Corp. and the Lambert Airport Program Management office, to lead and manage the $1 billion Lambert-St. Louis International Airport expansion, which was completed in 2006. The Lambert-St. Louis Airport Expansion program was the largest public works project in St. Louis history, spanning a seven-year project schedule.

KWAME is currently the program management consultant on the Airport Experience Program, a renovation campaign at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The project will redefine, renovate and enhance the terminal, concourse and passenger-support facilities.
