Metal Guide Features Seismic-Design Focus
The Washington, D.C.-based International Code Council has issued Seismic Design Guide for Metal Building Systems.
The guide puts metal building seismic and design requirements in one resource.
It includes narratives about metal building systems, examples of realistic design situations, engineering diagrams and code commentary. It references the 2006 International Building Code, the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures ASCE/SEI Standard 7-05. Structural steel design is based on the American Institute of Steel Construction’s Specification for Structural Steel Buildings Standard AISC 360-05 and the Seismic Provisions for Steel Buildings Standard AISC 341-05.
To purchase the guide, visit www.iccsafe.org/seismicmetal2006 or call 800-786-4452.
Indiana Roundtable Seeks New Mentors, Proteges
The Indiana Construction Roundtable has announced that it is encouraging new participants in its mentor-protege program.
To begin the process of becoming either a mentor or protege, an online application must be downloaded (www.indianaconstruction.org/mentor_protege_program.asp#2) and completed offline. For more information contact Libby Denehie, ICR diversity coordinator, at 317-328-2149.
Partnerships that already exist can apply, but new relationships are preferred. The program is not for new businesses: A protege must have been in existence for at least three years to be eligible.
Chicago Lock Wins Metal-Construction Honor
The Chicago Harbor Lock Control House is the overall winner in a metal-construction competition.
The facility, which is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, features 9,000 sq ft of a zinc composite material with a pre-weathered finish.
The zinc composite material was chosen for its durability in a marine environment, its smooth, contemporary look and its reflection of a naval atmosphere.
The building is the gateway to one of the nation’s busiest commercial and recreational waterways and replaces a facility built in 1938. The design was driven in part by the narrow, 40-ft-wide site and the need for an unobstructed view of the harbor and locks. It houses office space, maintenance and storage facilities, and a second-floor control operation with a 270-degree view of the harbor.
The competition is held by the Glenview-based Metal Construction Association. The four other winners are outside the Midwest.
In other news, the MCA has named Jeff Irwin, CEO of Columbus, Ohio-based Kingspan/Benchmark, was named president of the association. He takes the reins from Dick Bus.
Also new at MCA are Karl Hielscher, president/CEO of Lewisville, Texas-based Metl-Span, and Roger Sieja, director of commercial development coil coatings for Springdale, Pa.-based PPG. They take seats on the board of directors.
