Construction Done on Evansville Sports
Facility
Bloomington-based Weddle Bros. Construction Co. Inc. has
announced the completion of the $12 million Swonder Sportsplex
project in Evansville.
The 103,000-sq.-ft. project entailed the demolition of the
deteriorating 38,000-sq.-ft. Swonder Ice Arena, and construction
of the new, larger sportsplex and parking lots.
The steel frame and load-bearing concrete masonry building
has a brick veneer exterior and a metal standing seam roof
with clear canopy entry and skylights.
The new facility houses two National Hockey League-size ice
rinks with combined seating for 5,400 people, office and retail
space, locker rooms and four multipurpose party rooms that
double as office space during tournaments.
A 10,000-sq.-ft. mezzanine features a fitness area and walking/running
track. There are both indoor and outdoor inline skating and
skateboard parks.
Evansville-based architectural firm Edmund L. Hafer &
Associates designed the project for the city of Evansville.
