Work Starts on Smallwood Plaza

Work has begun on Smallwood Plaza, a 500,000-sq.-ft., three-building residential and commercial development on a full city block in Bloomington.

The $30 million project calls for demolition of a manufacturing plant and smaller retail facility, construction of two new buildings - Smallwood Plaza and Smallwood Annex - and renovation of a historic building, which will be named Smallwood Pike. The project is slated for completion in August 2004.

The development will retain the character of downtown Bloomington, featuring red brick exterior with limestone accents.

The main building, Smallwood Plaza, will stand at 10 stories, housing 223 apartments, with 17,368 sq. ft. of ground floor retail space along College Avenue. The building will also contain ground level and subterranean parking for 280 vehicles.

The two-story, 7,382-sq.-ft. Smallwood Pike building is planned entirely for commercial use. The three-story Smallwood Annex building will contain 9,400 sq. ft. of mixed-use space.

Bloomington-based Weddle Bros. Construction Co. is the general contractor.

Woolpert Joins Airport Design Team

The Indianapolis Airport Authority has selected Dayton, Ohio-based Woolpert LLP to join the project team for the preliminary site design at the airport's new Midfield Terminal.

The firm will provide site preparation, grading and storm drainage design for the airside portion of the terminal.
