MSOE Hits Vegas Jackpot

Two undergraduate student teams from the Milwaukee School of Engineering recently made history.

They took first place in a national construction management competition held during the recent ConExpo-ConAgg/IFPE convention in Las Vegas, the first time in the history of the competition that one university took top honors in both contest categories: design-build and commercial construction.

Six students prepared the design, estimate, schedule and construction plan and gave a presentation to a panel of professionals in 38 hours for the Design-Build Competition. The proposed project was a student union.

Six others in the Commercial Construction team presented a plan in 26 hours for a high school inside a juvenile detention facility, including plan, estimate, schedule, safety plan and presentation.

Each team member received a trophy and watch, and the MSOE program received $4,500.

The Alexandria, Va.-based Associated General Contractors of America and the Provo, Utah-based Associated Schools of Construction were the sponsors.

MSOE competed with teams from 11 other universities around the country that won their regional events.

The building will feature traditional Tibetan architectural features and environmentally sustainable building methods.

The main assembly hall with geothermal heating will house historic paintings and statuary. The design calls for other facilities to blend into rural the site's rural setting, including proposed cultural and language classrooms, library space, kitchen facilities, patios and gardens.

Skilled craftsmen will be sought for painting, assisting with Tibetan ornamentation, carpentry, clearing trees, landscaping and cleanup.

Milwaukee-based The Bentley Co. is the general contractor, and the Vast Design Collaborative, also of Milwaukee, is the architect.
