Completion 11: Morgan Stanley/Discover Financial Services Headquarters
Cost: $170 million

Three buildings make up the Morgan Stanley/Discover Financial Services headquarters in Riverwoods, Ill.

They range between two and five floors, said Jeff Geier, a project manager with Schaumburg, Ill.-base Power Construction Co., a joint-venture member of the general contracting team. The facility covers about 650,000 sq. ft. on about 60 acres of land in north suburban Cook County.

Structural steel holds up the buildings, and the facade is made of precast and aluminum curtain wall.

The site required balancing because of the large number of hills, he said.

The mechanical, electrical and plumbing system was "complex," and a central plant was installed for economy and reliability.

The buildings are organized around a water feature, which acts as a detection basin for the site.

Significant landscaping went into the project, Geier said. Approximately 150 34-ft.-tall evergreens and native grasses were planted.
